Property Overview
The Abril Property is a 40 acre lode property located in the Cochise Mountains, just 12 miles north of Tombstone.
The property has a long detailed history and has produced gold and copper. The mine has been noted by USGS to be useful for zinc deposits, however the ores from the mill stated returns of gold and copper.
There are visible vein deposits of gold in levels 1, 2, and 3. Levels 4 and 5 show much more copper. Assays taken from inside the mine averaged over 2 oz/T in Gold and over 12 oz/T of silver. Copper averaged 4.2% per ton.
An outcropping or gold material in limonite material was found near the crest of the ridgeline above the mine, thus establishing and Apex ownership.
The subsurface workings are reported to be over 31,000' or approximately 6 miles. Surveyors reported 16,250' but stated that the lower 2 levels were not accessible due to rock fall.
A DMEA loan was qualified in the mid-1950s and pushed an additional 1800' of development into the workings in an attempt to find zinc or tungsten. Surprisingly there were no returns of either, however the loans were repaid within 2 years. This indicates a significant return of mineral that was not zinc or tungsten.
The mine was held by the Owens family from 1903 to 1989 when it was sold to an external family member. A full geological assessment was carried out on the property and it was labelled with positive potential for gold development.
The property has not been worked in earnest since at least 1981 when a carload of ore was sold to a refiner outside of Tombstone for $5000. The content of the ore was not disclosed.
This property is remote, road access is currently by high clearance 4WD only and there are two spots that are impassable by anything other than by foot. The mine remains much as it has been left in the early 1980s. There is no evidence of trespass or other damage to the site.
There is visible gold in many spots in the mine that can be extracted with minimal effort. This raw gold would still need to be crushed and refined for purity, but its a good place to start.
An ideal property for a small group of miners to work together, or for a larger commercial operation to extract the material on site.
Gold Rush Expeditions, Inc. does offer mining consultation services and assistance with permits for a small fee.
