Nevada Regional Mine Rescue Competition Highlights

Nevada Regional Mine Rescue Competition Highlights
print

Since mining began, miners have worked underground with the assurance that if a disaster occurred that caused them to be trapped underground other miners would stop at nothing in attempting to rescue them. This is the heart of mine rescue. This tradition continues today in the underground mine rescue programs which carry out highly advanced functions. These operations are performed by skilled and trained men and women who sacrifice countless hours away from their families in order to ensure that in the event of a mine disaster they will be ready and willing to rescue their fellow miners. Federal regulations require that operators of underground mines have to provide trained and fully equipped mine rescue teams in the unfortunate event of a mine incident.

These mine rescue teams keep their skills sharp by fielding mine rescue competition teams that compete against other mines in a friendly but highly competitive yearly competition season. The 2015 underground mine rescue competition season kicked off this year with the Nevada mine rescue association regional competition in Winnemucca Nevada. 10 Teams from all over the western United States competed in the three day competition on March 10-12.

The teams that participated from Nevada were: Newmont Carlin, Newmont portal mines, Barrick Gold Strike, Barrick Turquoise Ridge, Barrick Cortez, and Klondex Gold mine . The out of state teams that participated were: Lucky Friday mine from Idaho’s silver valley, Still Water mine from Montana, and two college teams from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden Colorado.

Mine rescue competitions consist of three events:
1. Field problem: In this event a mock mine disaster is set up in which the mine rescue team, with self contained breathing apparatus on, has to systematically explore and map the mine, find and extinguish all fires, and find and rescue all surviving miners. The team has 90 minutes to accomplish this
2. First aid problem: In this event a mock first aid scenario is set up in which teams of three from each mine have to assess and treat a trauma victim. The trauma portion has a 20 minute time cap. The first aid team is also tested on their CPR skills according to the most recent AHA guidelines.
3. Team Technician problem: In this event teams of two from each mine are tested on their knowledge of both the SCBA apparatus and gas monitors that their team uses in the event of a mine disaster. Both machines are bugged and the tech team has to find all the bugs and have both machines ready for use. The tech team has 30 minutes to complete this.

This year’s results were as follows:

Field problem:
1st place: Newmont Carlin
2nd place: Turquoise Ridge
3rd place: Barrick Cortez
4th place: Still Water mine

First Aid problem:
1st place: Turquoise Ridge
2nd place: Colorado School of Mines Silver team
3rd place: Lucky Friday mine
4th place: Barrick Cortez

Technician problem:
1st place: Luck Friday mine
2nd place: Newmont Portal mines
3rd place: Newmont Carlin
